Dow Gardens
Flitting from branch to branch unfettered by gravity or duty, that’s how you appear to me.
Transfixed by your freedom, intoxicated by the fountain’s music.
My soul follows my eyes as they follow your bright red coat.
I am drawn up and away.
This place cannot hold me.
These worries are not mine.
A cloud passes before the sun and I lose your sight.
The what ifs crowd out your freedom song.
My eyes fall and hands grasp at anything that can break my fall.
Then…
Just as I feel there’s no hope left, the cloud moves on and you dart from the corner of my eye.
You fly away and I cannot see you - but now I know, and will not forget, that I am like you afterall and the darkness cannot last.
